Born in a middle class family to Kova Ramulu & Kova Mangamma in Hyderabad, Telangana, Dr. K. Laxman is currently the National President for Bharatiya Janata Party’s OBC Morcha and is one of the surprise pick for the Rajya Sabha and he has been sent to the house from Uttar Pradesh.
The move has been seen as a strategic maneuver in view of the forthcoming elections to the State Assembly next year. As there is representation from four MPs from Telangana in the Lok Sabha, Dr. Laxman being nominated to Rajya Sabha will ensure that he would be able to raise issues relating to Telangana in the Upper House.
Dr. Laxman is the former State President of BJP in Telangana from 2016 to 2020. He formerly represented Musheerabad Assembly constituency twice as MLA from 1999-2004 in Andhra Pradesh Assembly and from 2014-2018 in Telangana Legislative Assembly.
An outstanding student right from the childhood, he got his Ph.D. in Geology from Osmania University in the early eighties. Though he had an opportunity to get into a lucrative job given the demand that the subject had, driven by a passion for public service, he entered politics. As a student, he joined ABVP at Osmania University and in the year 1980, he joined Bharatiya Janata Party.
Since then, he rose to various levels within the party right from Hyderabad City General Secretary in 1994, through Hyderabad City President from 1995-1999. He contested for the first time from Musheerabad Assembly Constituency in 1994 and lost narrowly to Congress Candidate Kodanda Reddy but then got re-elected from the same constituency in 1999 with a huge margin of 18,567 votes. He was also chosen as Deputy Floor Leader during the then AP Legislative Assembly. In the years 2004 and 2009, he lost by slender margins against Congress candidates.
He was elected as MLA for the second time from Musheerabad Assembly constituency in 2014 Telangana Assembly election. In the year 2016, he was appointed as BJP Telangana State President by BJP National President – Amit Shah and Prime Minister – Shri. Narendra Modi. He was representing Musheerabad Assembly Constituency as MLA till 2018 and also worked as State President for Bharatiya Janata Party in Telangana until 2020.
A meticulous planner and is known in the party for his organizational skills. Dr. Laxman has the rare ability of mingling and involving with the masses and elite alike which speaks volumes about his leadership qualities. He preaches and practices the motto that politics should transcend all barriers for the development.
Dr. Laxman has also been a sportsperson in his younger days. He played Cricket in Hyderabad Leagues and also participated in various district level Volley Ball tournaments.
Expressing gratitude towards his party for sending him to the Rajya Sabha, he said: “BJP is a party with a difference and it is indeed a peoples’ party. From a normal party worker, I was appointed as the state president for Telangana twice and then as the president for National OBC Morcha. Nomination to the Rajya Sabha also gives me an opportunity to keep the voice of the people of Telangana and the issues related to the state in the Upper House.”
