Asim Arun, a 1994 batch IPS officer took VRS in January 2022 and joined BJP for what he says is another aspect of public service. BJP was quick enough to file him from SP’s bastion Kannauj from where he defeated 3 times sitting MLA Anil Dohre.
Defying all speculations, Arun demolished the Samajwadi Party (SP) bastion and defeated the three-time sitting MLA Anil Dohre by a decent margin of just over 6,000 votes. BJP was quick enough to en-cash the victory and projecting him as a Dalit face in CM Yogi Adityanath’s cabinet, he has been sworn in as a minister of state (Independent Charge).
“There is no magic in politics, the politician on whom people have trust, they win and anyway the majority are with the BJP. We have done big projects here and we have also taken the poor along with it. We have strengthened the poor people’s houses, given them toilets, gas, etc. BJP is very considerate of the poor class and our main agenda for the elections was the development and the way we have developed the state, especially from the grassroots level. This is people trust us and therefore we have created history after 37 years by coming to power consecutively for the 2nd time,” said Arun.
Life As A Cop
It would not be wrong to say that Arun has the instinct of a police officer in his blood as his father, late Sriram Arun, was also an IPS officer and had the credentials of forming for Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) wing in Uttar Pradesh besides being the police chief (Director General of Police) of the state twice.
Arun also has a few credentials under his belt. During his stint with UP ATS in 2017, Asim headed the ATS commandos team and shot dead Saifullah, a terrorist of ISIS, in Lucknow. He was also appointed as the first Commissioner of Police of Kanpur when Police Commissionerate System was introduced in the district. Along with this, he was also heading the 112 service.
During central deputation, Arun served in the core protection team of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Special Protection Group (SPG) and earlier got trained in policing in Kosovo in Europe in 2002-03. In his early days, he served as Superintendent of Police and Deputy Inspector General of Police in Hathras, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, Agra, Aligarh, and Gorakhpur.
