
During his three-day visit to Japan to attend the Quad Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi yet again had a record of sorts. He had 23 engagements, including meetings with three world leaders, in around 40 hours of stay in Japan. Besides, he also joined US President Joe Biden and prime ministers of Australia and Japan at the Quad summit in Tokyo on May 24.
During his visit, PM Modi also had business, diplomatic and community interactions where he interacted with over 30 Japanese top executives and CEOs and also with hundreds of Indian Diaspora members.
The Quad Summit
It is to be mentioned that the Summit in Tokyo was the fourth interaction of Quad Leaders since their first virtual meeting in March 2021, in-person Summit in Washington in September 2021 and virtual meeting in March 2022.
The Quad Summit provided an opportunity for the Leaders to exchange views about developments in the Indo-Pacific region and contemporary global issues of mutual interest.
The Leaders also reviewed the progress of Quad initiatives and Working Groups, identified new areas of cooperation and provided strategic guidance and vision for future collaboration.
Bilateral Meetings with Japan, US and Australia
In his first bilateral meeting with Japan PM Fumio Kishida, the two leaders carry forwarded their conversations from the 14th India-Japan Annual Summit held in March 2022, when PM Kishida visited India.
PM Modi’s bilateral meeting with the President of the United States of America, Joseph R. Biden Jr. marked a continuation of their regular dialogue having interacted most recently in virtual mode on 11 April 2022. The two Leaders reviewed the India-US Strategic Partnership and followed up on discussions held during PM’s bilateral meeting with President Biden in September 2021. They also exchanged views on regional and global developments of shared interest.
A fruitful discussion was also held between PM Modi and Australia’s newly elected Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during which the two leaders reviewed the multifaceted bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed their desire to deepen it. The talks focused on deepening the developmental cooperation between India and Australia across diverse sectors.
Meeting With Top Executives and CEOs
PM Modi also held an imperative meeting with top executives & CEOs from more than 30 Japanese companies to further cement the India-Japan business ecosystem.
These companies represented various sectors, including automobiles, electronics, semiconductors, steel, technology, trading, and banking & finance. Further, major business bodies and organizations from India and Japan such as Keidanren, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Japan-India Business Consultative Committee (JIBCC) and Invest India also took part in the meeting.
Notably, the majority of these top executives and CEOs of Japanese companies have major investments and operations in India.
Modi also apprised the Japanese business leaders of the recent reforms undertaken by India to improve the ease of doing business and invited them to ‘Make in India for the World’. This also included initiatives such as National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, and semiconductor policy and highlighted the robust startup ecosystem of India.
