The Covid-19 pandemic not only affected the health of the people worldwide and took many lives, but it also hit lives in yet another crucial way. Many lost the most vital aspect of a livelihood–their jobs.

Many in India also felt the heat in so many ways that cannot be explained in words and went ahead to adopt ways that were far beyond their social stature or expertise. Though no work is small or big to sustain oneself or a family, Moutushi Basu, a lady in her early 30s and a native of Kolkata, took a job that is, in a way, is least expected, for a woman to do.

 

 

Moutushi used to work in Panasonic and as lakhs of Indians, she lost her job when the Covid-19 lockdown stuck the country. Having no other option, she picked up a job that not many women would prefer.

Having no other option to sustain and to support her family, she took the job of a rider with Uber.

Ranabir Bhattacharyaa, a writer by profession, shared his experience when he met Moutushi during a ride booking on Uber.

“Today as I booked a two-wheeler Uber Moto for a quick ride across the city. I met Moutushi, a lady in her early 30s. She lives in Baruipur, suburban area near Kolkata. Before the lockdown phase, she used to work in the Panasonic. She lost her job in the Covid phase like lakhs of Indians. Today, in spite of the drizzle, she didn’t ask for single extra penny,” wrote Ranabir.

He further elaborated his brief conversation with Moutushi. “I asked her if she has any experience of riding a two-wheeler on the roads of Kolkata during the rainy season and she candidly replied that she don’t have any other choice now to run her family.”

Impressed and touched by Basu’s never giving up attitude, Bhattacharyaa, while concluding his post, wrote “May the force be with her”.
